Phoebe Wolfe is an Australian writer and director based in Sydney. Her work examines the gap between how women perform themselves and who they are, often through questions of morality, desire and self-image.
Her debut short, The Overthrow (2023), follows two teenage girls roller-skating from Sydney to Canberra in a climate protest. The film premiered at the Academy-accredited HollyShorts Film Festival, toured Australia with Flickerfest and won Best Drama at the Australian Women’s Film Festival. In 2024, Phoebe completed the Australians in Film Untapped Development Lab under the mentorship of Patricia Rozema (Mansfield Park, I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing). She is currently developing her debut feature, Purity, with Screen Australia.
Phoebe carries the same lens into fashion, a world built on image. Her path began when ELLE commissioned her to make a short film with Sophie Wilde for the magazine’s print relaunch, a piece that reworked a scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds. Cinema has remained her reference point since, from restaging the mirror scene from La Haine for ELLE to building a beauty film for Persona around Bella Freud’s Fashion Neurosis. She has directed for CHANEL, Dior, Paspaley and MECCA, and for every major fashion publication in Australia, including Vogue, ELLE, RUSSH and SIDE-NOTE.
Phoebe is a member of Praxis Pictures, a filmmaking collective under which its members produce their narrative work. She brings the same team onto her fashion and commercial films, treating each brief with the craft and collaboration of a short film. In 2025, she was named ELLE’s Next Gen Filmmaker of the Year.
